St Anne’s Hospital, Tottenham

Project Overview
MEC Commercial was commissioned to carry out comprehensive gas and water pipework modifications at St Anne’s Hospital in Tottenham. The project was part of a larger refurbishment, including roof replacement on the hospital’s plant rooms. Our scope included the remodelling and installation of new gas pipework, alteration of 100mm water pipes, and the removal and reinstatement of existing pipework to facilitate construction access.
Objectives
- Remodelling and installation of new gas pipework in the hospital’s plant rooms.
- Removal and reinstatement of 100mm water pipes to allow roof replacement.
- Ensure all work meets British Standards for purging and safety in plant room environments.
- Minimise disruption to hospital operations during construction.
Challenges
- Existing pipework was obstructing the planned roof replacement, requiring careful removal and temporary isolation.
- Some water pipework was leaking and needed replacement in conjunction with the roof works.
- Gas piping needed to be purged, and remodelling had to meet strict safety standards in an operational hospital environment.
- Tight one-month timeline requiring precise coordination between mechanical, plumbing, and roofing teams.
Our Approach
For the gas pipe remodelling and installation, we installed new yellow ochre gas pipework in accordance with British Standards for plant room purging, while carefully remodelling existing purge pipework to safely remove sections without disrupting hospital operations.
Rigorous safety checks were carried out throughout the process to ensure zero risk during and after installation. In terms of water pipe alterations, we removed and replaced 100mm mains water pipes that obstructed the planned roof replacement, reinstating all water piping once the new roof was in place, including lagging to prevent heat loss and enhance durability. Booted water alterations addressed previous leaks, providing a secure and long-lasting solution. Throughout the project, all work was coordinated closely with the roof replacement schedule: pipework was strategically removed to allow roof works to proceed unhindered, and all gas and water systems were reinstalled post-roofing with minimal disruption to hospital services.
The Conclusion:
The project was completed within the scheduled one-month timeframe, with all gas and water modifications carried out safely and efficiently. Thanks to careful planning and the strategic temporary removal of critical pipework, the roof replacement proceeded without issue, allowing the hospital to maintain smooth operations throughout. The plant rooms now feature fully compliant, modernised gas and water systems, providing St Anne’s Hospital with a reliable infrastructure solution. The client expressed their satisfaction with the professionalism, efficiency, and attention to detail demonstrated by MEC Commercial, noting that the project was delivered seamlessly with minimal disruption to hospital activities.
